Note from Home Owner Association President

A note from the Homeowners Association in regards to some new animals swimming around our ponds, the road widening construction and the new apartments on SE15th.

We have had beavers in the past in our common area ponds which caused damage to many of the trees around the pond. Some residents at the time put up chicken wire around the trees in hopes of saving them and there was an attempt made about three years ago to trap them. The trapping attempt was unsuccessful because, the traps used at the time, were tampered with. Shortly there after the beavers left the ponds but we were never able to understand why. Last year some residents were convinced we had beavers again and our new pond service was contacted to investigate (they have much experience in dealing with beavers). They determined the animals swimming around were actually muskrats and didn’t appear to be causing any damage so the Directors, at the time, decided not to take any further action, and shortly thereafter they also left the ponds. In the last week we have heard multiple sightings involving something swimming around the ponds. Again some are convinced it is beavers and some are convinced it is muskrats again. Either way we have called our pond service to investigate and report there findings. Once the investigation is complete and we know what animals are swimming around we will update the information.

The road widening construction has caused a significant increase in traffic especially in the west section of Oakwood East. Unfortunately as residents, we can not restrict the use of our roads in the neighborhood. However we have reached out to our Midwest City Community Police Officer and asked for additional police patrols during the heaviest traffic times in the morning and afternoon. Midwest City has also put up a radar at the Sheffield Entrance and plans to move it strategically to different areas in Oakwood East as the construction effort goes through different phases of road closures.

The construction of the new apartments have created some concern over the use of the Oakwood East common areas especially the pond and playground. A visit was made to the apartment complex recently and through that visit we now have better information to share with you. The apartments are currently 50% occupied (216 units total) and are offering 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, and 3 bedroom units from $700 to $1,355 a month depending on the type. They offer the following amenities a 24 hour fitness center, a pool, a play ground and areas to walk dogs with pick up stations located throughout. The visit also confirmed the owner of this complex has no plans to utilize section 8 now or in the future and has never used section 8 for any of their properties. Finally through this visit the complex has agreed to send a notice to all of their residents to let them know that the Oakwood East Common Areas are considered private property for the use of Oakwood East Residents and to remind them the speed limit throughout our neighborhood is 25 MPH.

Thanks,
Ed
